The Resistance

 Hi Friends,

We all are struggling under the weight of the authoritarian takeover of the federal government, by the Trump regime, but I will briefly speak for myself. I have been struggling mightily with feeling powerless to do anything significant to counter the effects of all of the federal madness. I have been living under the mantra that doing small things to promote democracy, kindness, loving my neighbor (literal and figurative), and so on, is the only way we are going to get through this together. I was just rehearsing this mantra in my head when the not so quiet voice in my head declared that my pitiful little acts of kindness and organization were not enough. I immediately realized that this voice of doubt was likely accurate, unless I joined with others to pool our small acts of resistance. So, I'm writing you today to invite us all to join together to amplify our acts of resistance!

Q:What are we resisting?

A: We are resisting the hateful rhetoric, tactics of divide and conquer, gaslighting, intentional ignorance, and the acts of making the rich richer at the cost of the most vulnerable.

I'm open to ideas for how to proceed, but for now I invite you all to share in the comments how you're feeling, what you're experiencing, and/or your acts of resistance. As long as you're being honest with your comments as well as being kind towards others, there is no specific way to share. It is my hope that we can lift each other up and bring a group of people together for the purpose of supporting one another.

I was thinking we could use a whiteboard type of a space which would provide a safe and private digital space for us to collaborate. (password protected) This format probably isn't going to work for that. Any ideas??

You could share resources that you're accessing.

Share stories of how others have lifted you up and you've lifted up others.

Share your stories so that we can all be reminded that we are not alone in this moment nor will we be alone as we move forward and build a better tomorrow.

Please commence brainstorming if you, like me, are looking for people to connect with for the purpose of lifting one another up and collaborating in many small acts of nonviolent resistance.

-Matthew

  1. I was responding to a survey from Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho about housing policy when I got the email from Matt about this project. Hitting submit on that survey was very satisfying.

    1. You've got to listen to this chapter from a Volts podcast episode interview with rep. Sean Casten's take on Sen. Crapo. He's not a fan!

  2. I've been reading a lot. On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder, Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, On Community by Casey Plett, Make Your Mind an Ocean by Lama Yeshe. Seeking answers in different realms that feel important today (politics, media, community, and mental health).

I feel like I'm prepping myself for a future that I think is coming but can't be certain about. Maybe it's more about shaping myself to embody the future I want to see? Dunno. But I'm with you: bottom line, I'm searching for something tangible to latch onto. Bernie and AOC feel close. So did Corey Booker's speech. I appreciate you for starting a dialogue.

  3. A couple of weeks ago I was able to spend time to testify out against anti-trans bills at the capitol, that felt tangible and real. Saturday our youngest is organizing a dance party protest specifically targeted at empowering LGBTQIA+ kids. In the in between it all feels like a lot. The disappearing of immigrants or perceived immigrants is so overwhelming it is paralyzing and I'm not sure where to start but feel the need to do something.

    1. A dance party protest sounds like great idea - a way of having fun and being visible. I think just showing up and speaking out matters a lot. Imagine what things would feel like if no one did.

  4. I have joined a local group called Yes We Can! This group has a Facebook page and letter- writing campaigns directed at representatives as well as in the local newspaper. It also keeps a list of area protests. I have organized a weekly gathering on immigration and the Bible. A good resource for anyone interested is "Immigrants, the Bible, and You" by Amanda Benckhuysen, a former Hebrew Bible prof at The University of Dubuque.
